Harmful foods that should be avoided for any dog or puppy

Dogs are a fantastic companion for anyone looking for a pet with bundles of energy with a loyal and caring nature. In order to keep any puppy or dog in peak condition it is imperative to understand the importance of good dog nutrition. Providing a well balanced pet diet is the best way to ensure any canine stays happy and healthy. Just like humans, a dog’s diet is where they obtain all the nutrients, vitamins and mineral for life. However, as a dog’s digestive system differs greatly to a person, for example, it is much shorter and has slower enzymes; it means that there are some foods a dog should not incorporate into their diet.

Many people are aware that the pet diet for dogs should not include chocolate as chemicals in it can cause seizures, comas and even death. The darker the chocolate the more harmful it is even in small amounts and symptoms may not appear at first but can occur suddenly.  However, where the correct dog nutrition is concerned there are numerous other household foods that are dangerous, and potentially lethal to a puppy or dog. Onions are particularly harmful. Whether they are powdered, raw or cooked they contain substances that destroy red blood cells which can result in acute anaemia, weakness and breathing difficulties. Garlic and chives also contain these substances and even if only consumed in small amounts, over sustained periods of time, this can have an accumulative effect and be potentially fatal. Avocados also contain a toxic substance called persin that causes abdominal and breathing problems. Many different nuts and seeds are poisonous to dogs including walnuts, macadamia nuts and most fruit seeds and pips. To ensure your pet avoids ingesting any harmful substances it is advisable to stick to pet food brands such as Hill’s Pets that make sure their food is safe and contains everything necessary for optimum dg nutrition.
